At a glance

  • No single price: the total depends on what is done, the anaesthetic and the day-surgery facility.
  • Written, itemised quote after your first consultation, so you can see each fee.
  • Separate fees: surgeon, anaesthetist and day-surgery facility. The first consultation is charged separately $300; the second is free.
  • Medicare: not for appearance alone. Item 35534 applies only if strict criteria are met, including a labium more than 8 cm long.
  • No payment plans or finance. Booking is at least 7 days after you give consent.

There is no single price for labiaplasty. Your total depends on what is being done, the type of anaesthetic and the day-surgery facility, so Dr Reema Hadi gives you a written, itemised quote after your first consultation. Depending on your health and the procedure in question, labiaplasty costs at the Swan clinic including day surgery and anaesthetist fees are $6500. If performed at Kareena private hospital, the costs will vary depending on the procedure performed, private health insurance status and whether you qualify for an item number.

This guide explains each part of the fee, what your quote includes, when Medicare or private health insurance may help, and how payment works at The Swan Clinic.

How much does a labiaplasty cost in Sydney?

Generally the cost is $6500 all inclusive after your $300 consultation fee. This includes, surgical fee, anaesthetic fee and facility fee. This is a day surgery which means you go home the same day. Additional procedures may incur an additional cost. Health concerns may mean your procedure is performed at Kareena private hospital. Additional charges will be applicable. After your consultation, you will be provided with a written quote which is the figure to rely on, because it is based on your examination and the surgical plan you agree with Dr Hadi.

Labiaplasty done to change appearance is not covered by Medicare, so most patients pay the full fee themselves. A Medicare rebate is possible only when strict medical criteria are met, which we explain below.

What makes up the cost

Your quote brings together the fees of everyone involved in your care.

  • Surgeon's fee: Dr Hadi's fee for planning and performing your operation. It depends on what is being done, for example labia minora reduction alone or combined with clitoral hood reduction.
  • Anaesthetist's fee: charged by the specialist anaesthetist who looks after you during surgery. It depends mainly on the type of anaesthetic and how long the operation takes.
  • Day-surgery facility fee: covers the operating theatre, nursing staff, recovery area and surgical supplies at Swan clinic or Kareena private hospital.
  • Follow-up care
  • Going-home medicines: antibiotic tablets and pain relief. You will also need pads for about the first week.

Consultation fees are separate from the surgical fee. The first consultation is $300. Your second consultation is at no extra charge.

Why the cost differs from person to person

  • What is being treated: labia minora reduction alone is usually a shorter operation than one that also includes the clitoral hood, the labia majora or the perineum.
  • Additional procedures: additional procedures take a longer time and incur additional cost.
  • Previous surgery: revision labiaplasty after surgery elsewhere is often more complex to plan and perform.

What your written quote includes

You receive your costs in writing before you agree to surgery. The Medical Board of Australia's cosmetic surgery guidelines list what this cost information must cover, and Dr Hadi's quote is itemised so you can see each part.

The total cost of the planned operation. If at the Swan clinic, this is a set price of $6500 for a labiaplasty. If additional procedures or a different location, the costs will itemised according to:

  • The surgeon's fee
  • The anaesthetist's fee, or how to find it out if they bill you directly
  • The day-surgery facility fee
  • Any deposit, the amounts due and the due dates
  • Whether a deposit is refunded if you change your mind or surgery is postponed
  • Follow-up visits and what they cost, if anything
  • Possible further costs, such as treating a complication or a later revision

Ask about anything that is unclear before you sign. Receiving a quote does not commit you to surgery.

Day surgery or an overnight stay?

Labiaplasty at The Swan Clinic is day surgery, and you go home the same day. An overnight hospital admission is not usually needed, and it would add the cost of a hospital bed, overnight nursing and meals.

Wherever it happens, cosmetic surgery must be done in a facility accredited to national safety and quality standards. This is a Medical Board requirement.

If Dr Hadi recommends an overnight stay for a medical reason, the extra cost will be in your quote. For the day itself, you fast for at least 6 hours and need a driver and someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours. Read more in our guide to anaesthesia and your surgery day.

Does Medicare or private health insurance help?

Not when surgery is for appearance alone. Medicare may contribute only when you meet the criteria for MBS item 35534: you are 18 or older, a labium extends more than 8 cm below the vaginal opening when you stand, and it causes significant functional impairment.

If a Medicare item applies, hospital cover that includes gynaecology may help with the hospital and anaesthetist costs. Our guide Is labiaplasty covered by Medicare? sets out the full checklist.

Do you offer payment plans or finance?

No. The Swan Clinic does not offer payment plans or arrange finance. The Medical Board's cosmetic surgery guidelines say doctors must not offer, promote or recommend financing schemes such as loans or commercial payment plans, and must not encourage patients to take on debt or use their super to pay for cosmetic surgery.

We can tell you which payment methods we accept and when the surgical fee is due.

Under the same guidelines, surgery cannot be booked and no deposit can be taken until at least 7 days after you have had two consultations and signed your consent. Use that week to think it over without pressure.

Can I use my superannuation?

Whether super can be released early on compassionate grounds is decided by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), not by the clinic or your surgeon. The ATO says early release is available only in very limited circumstances and as a last resort, and that cosmetic or elective procedures usually don't meet the rules.

The Swan Clinic does not help with super release applications. For the rules, see the ATO's compassionate release page. For guidance on what using super would mean for your retirement, see moneysmart.gov.au or speak with a licensed financial adviser.

Look beyond the price

Who performs your surgery matters as much as the fee. In Australia, only doctors with specialist registration in surgery may call themselves a surgeon, and you can check any doctor's registration and specialty on the Ahpra public register.

Is labiaplasty done as day surgery?
