Before labiaplasty you'll have two consultations with specialist plastic surgeon Dr Reema Hadi, then a cooling-off period of at least 7 days before anything is booked. Nothing is decided at the first appointment, and you can stop at any point.
This guide walks you through each step: getting a referral, booking, what happens in each consultation, what Dr Hadi examines and why, how your privacy is protected, and a checklist of what to bring.
Before you book: get a referral
You'll need a referral from your GP or another specialist before your first appointment. Under the Medical Board of Australia's cosmetic surgery guidelines, everyone seeking cosmetic surgery needs a referral, preferably from their usual GP. The referring doctor must work independently of the surgeon and must not perform cosmetic procedures themselves.
This step protects you. Your GP can check for skin conditions, infections or menopause-related changes that need a different treatment, and can talk through your reasons with you. You don't need to explain everything in detail; asking for "a referral to a specialist plastic surgeon to discuss labiaplasty" is enough.
Booking your appointment
Call us on 02 9526 6885 or use the contact form. Our team is all female, and you only need to say you'd like a labiaplasty consultation. Tell us which rooms suit you, and let us know if you need any extra support at your appointment.
We'll explain the consultation fee when you book ($300). Under the Medical Board guidelines, no money is payable for surgery until after the cooling-off period, other than for your consultations.
Your consultations, step by step
- Referral. Your GP or specialist writes a referral addressed to Dr Hadi.
- First consultation. You meet Dr Hadi in person. She asks about your health, your symptoms and your reasons for considering surgery, and what you hope will change.
- A short questionnaire. Every patient completes a brief, validated questionnaire that screens for body dysmorphic disorder. The guidelines require this for all cosmetic surgery patients, and it is routine.
- Examination, if you're comfortable. Dr Hadi examines the area so she can give you advice that fits your body. You can ask questions, pause or stop at any time.
- Your options. Dr Hadi explains which technique she would suggest and why, the risks, the recovery, and other options, including not having surgery. You will not be asked to sign consent forms at this visit.
- Photos. You will be shown many before and after surgical photos performed by Dr Hadi at various stages of healing. This includes different anatomical variations.
- Your written quote. After the first consultation you receive a written, itemised quote covering the surgeon, anaesthetist and day-surgery fees.
- Time to think. Go home, read the information, talk to people you trust, and write down any new questions.
- Second consultation. No extra charge. We go through the plan and the risks again and answers your questions. If you decide to go ahead, this is when you give written consent. The second consultation can be in person, on the phone or by video.
- Cooling-off period. At least 7 days must pass after your two consultations and signed consent before surgery can be booked or a deposit paid.
- Preparing for surgery. You receive written instructions, including when to stop smoking and blood-thinning medicines, fasting times, and who needs to drive you home.
What Dr Hadi examines, and why
The examination is short and done with care. Dr Hadi looks at the whole area, because the right plan depends on how each part relates to the others:
- Labia minora. Length, shape and any difference between the two sides. This guides which technique is likely to suit you.
- Clitoral hood. Whether a larger hood would look out of balance after labiaplasty, and how low the clitoris sits. The clitoris must always stay covered, so this sets a safe limit.
- Labia majora and mons. Whether the outer labia or the mound above them are part of your concern.
- The back of the vaginal opening. About 1 in 10 women have webbing here (the posterior fourchette). It needs to be identified before surgery, otherwise it can cause rubbing later.
- The perineum. Any stretching or scarring from childbirth, which may need a different repair.
- Skin health. Signs of irritation, infection or a skin condition that should be treated first.
Dr Hadi may also ask about your pelvic floor, bladder and periods. Read more about the options in labiaplasty techniques.
Privacy, chaperones and photos
Your privacy is protected at every step. Dr Hadi and her whole team are women, and consultations happen in a private room.
- Chaperone. A chaperone from our all-female team is available for your examination. Just ask.
- Support person. You're welcome to bring a partner, friend or family member, or to come alone. Dr Hadi may ask to speak with you privately for part of the visit.
- Photos. Clinical photos may be taken for your medical record, but only with your consent. They are stored securely and kept confidential. They are never used for any other purpose without your separate written consent. Photos are not taken during the consultation.
- Your information. Your records are kept confidential and are not shared without your permission, except with doctors involved in your care.
Questions to ask Dr Hadi
Write your questions down before you arrive. These are a good start:
- Which technique would you use for me, and why?
- What are the risks for me, and how are complications managed?
- What result is realistic for my body?
- Do I also need hood, labia majora or perineal surgery, or not?
- Will I have a general or local anaesthetic, and where is the surgery done? [CHECK 7]
- How long will I need off work, exercise and sex?
- What is included in the quote, and what could cost extra?
- Does Medicare or my health fund cover any of this? See labiaplasty and Medicare.
- What follow-up visits will I have, and how do I reach you after surgery?

Risks and results
All surgery carries risks, including bleeding, infection, scarring, asymmetry and changes in sensation, and results vary from person to person. Read labiaplasty risks and sensation before your consultation, and learn more on our main labiaplasty page.
