FAT GRAFTING TO LABIA MAJORA

Fat grafting to labia majora | labia fat transfer

Labia Fat Grafting
The labia, like other parts of the body, may undergo changes over time. The labia majora (outer lips) can experience changes in volume and elasticity due to factors such as childbirth, menopause, or significant weight loss, which may result in reduced fullness.

Changes in Appearance
As the labia majora lose volume, the labia minora (inner lips) may become more prominent. This can affect the overall appearance of the vulva.

Potential Effects
A reduction in volume of the labia majora may lead to decreased cushioning, which some individuals report can cause discomfort during activities such as sexual intercourse.

Fat Grafting Procedure
Fat grafting to the labia majora is a surgical option offered at Swan Clinic. This procedure involves transferring fat to the labia majora to address volume loss. It may be performed as a standalone procedure or in combination with labiaplasty, depending on individual needs. Fat grafting is generally considered for individuals experiencing volume loss in the labia majora or a shallow groove between the labia minora and majora.

Fat Harvesting Sites
Fat can be harvested from various donor sites, including:

  • Lower abdomen (tummy area)
  • Upper abdomen (tummy area)
  • Flank area
  • Inner thighs
  • Outer thighs

Potential Risks – Fat Grafting to the Labia Majora

As with any surgical procedure, fat grafting to the labia majora involves general risks, as well as those specific to fat transfer and the genital area:

  • Infection at the donor or injection site, which may require antibiotics or further treatment
  • Bruising and swelling, which are common but usually temporary
  • Asymmetry or unevenness in size or contour following fat placement
  • Lumps or irregularities due to uneven fat distribution or fat necrosis
  • Fat resorption, where a portion of the transferred fat may not survive, affecting volume or symmetry
  • Oil cysts or firm nodules where fat cells break down
  • Changes in sensation, such as numbness, tingling, or hypersensitivity in the treated area
  • Persistent discomfort or tightness beyond the typical recovery period
  • Scarring at the donor site (where fat is harvested), usually minimal but variable
  • Anaesthesia-related risks, including allergic reactions or complications (if performed under sedation or general anaesthetic)

Recovery and Aftercare – Fat Grafting to the Labia Majora

  • Swelling and bruising are expected at both the donor and injection sites, and generally subside within a few weeks
  • Discomfort or tenderness can occur in both the treated and donor areas, and is usually managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relief
  • Compression garments may be advised for the donor area (e.g. abdomen or thighs) to support healing and reduce swelling
  • Cold packs may be cautiously used on the recipient area in the early phase, if recommended by your surgeon
  • Sitting and certain movements may be uncomfortable in the early days post-procedure
  • Sexual activity should generally be avoided for at least 4–6 weeks, or as directed by your surgeon
  • Strenuous activity, exercise, or heavy lifting should be avoided for approximately 2–4 weeks, depending on the extent of fat harvest and your individual recovery
  • Some volume loss is expected, as not all transferred fat will survive; final results typically take a few months to stabilise
  • Smoking and alcohol should be avoided during recovery, as they can negatively affect fat survival and wound healing
  • Follow-up appointments are important to monitor healing and evaluate outcomes; additional sessions may be discussed if further volume is desired
