THIGHPLASTY (THIGH LIFT)

A thigh lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the thigh area. This operation is often considered following changes in body weight or natural changes associated with aging. The procedure aims to improve the overall appear

What is a Thigh Lift?

Thigh lift surgery, also known as thighplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to address excess skin and fat in the thigh area. It is often considered by patients who have experienced changes in body shape due to weight fluctuations or aging. When excess fat alone is present, liposuction may sometimes be sufficient; however, when excess skin is also present, removal of this skin is necessary for optimal results.

Types of Thigh Lift Procedures

  1. Horizontal Incision Thigh Lift
This technique is suitable for patients with minimal horizontal excess. The incision is placed high on the inner thigh near the groin crease. Excess tissue is removed, and anchoring sutures are used to support long-term results. A drain is usually placed and removed the following day, and a compression garment is worn to support healing.
  2. Vertical Incision Thigh Lift
Recommended for patients with significant horizontal excess along the inner thigh. The incision runs vertically down the inner thigh, allowing removal of more extensive tissue. Anchoring sutures and a drain are used, with a compression garment applied post-surgery.
  3. T-Thigh Lift
This approach combines both horizontal and vertical incisions, allowing removal of excess tissue in multiple directions. It is used when a more comprehensive correction is necessary.

Benefits of Thigh Lift Surgery

  • Improved leg proportions
  • Easier fit and increased comfort in clothing
  • Improved comfort

Potential Risks – Thigh Lift Surgery

As with any surgical procedure, a thigh lift carries general and procedure-specific risks, including:

  • Infection at the surgical site, which may require antibiotics or further treatment
  • Bleeding or haematoma (collection of blood under the skin)
  • Scarring, which may be prominent, particularly in the groin or inner thigh area
  • Delayed wound healing, especially in areas with tension or friction
  • Seroma formation (fluid accumulation), which may require aspiration or drainage
  • Changes in sensation, including numbness, tingling, or increased sensitivity in the thighs
  • Wound breakdown or separation, especially where incisions are under mechanical stress
  • Asymmetry or contour irregularities following healing
  • Persistent swelling or firmness in the surgical area
  • Pain or discomfort beyond the typical recovery period
  • Restricted mobility or tightness in the thigh region during recovery
  • Anaesthesia-related risks, including allergic reactions or other adverse effects

Recovery and Aftercare – Thigh Lift Surgery

  • Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common and typically subside over several weeks
  • Pain management may include prescription or over-the-counter medications, as recommended by your surgeon
  • Dressings and wound care instructions should be followed closely to support healing and reduce the risk of infection
  • Compression garments may be advised for several weeks to minimise swelling and provide support to healing tissues
  • Walking and gentle movement are usually encouraged early on, but strenuous activity, heavy lifting, and exercise should be avoided for 4–6 weeks, or as directed
  • Driving should only resume once you can move comfortably and are no longer taking strong pain medication
  • Sleeping position may need to be adjusted to reduce tension on incisions
  • Scarring will develop along the incision lines; your surgeon may recommend scar management strategies
  • Smoking and alcohol should be avoided during the recovery period, as they may impair healing
  • Final results may take several months to fully settle as swelling resolves and tissues adjust
  • Follow-up appointments are important to monitor healing, identify any complications early, and discuss long-term outcomes
